The
first release on rx:tx by the Signal Territory project (Pact Systems/Random
Logic) is a conceptual one and dating originally in 1997, when it was
produced as part of the documenta X exhibition in Kassel, Germany for
the “radio meets documenta” project, sponsored jointly by documenta
and HR (hessische rudnfunk). The work is the result of the electromagnetic
spectrum research done during documenta X at the Makrolab (http://makrolab.ljudmila.org)
and of the interim “makrolab reports” done for the local HR station
in Kassel. The composition is produced entirely with SIGINT (signals
intelligence) material to the last beat, with the original Akai sample
files present on sector V., together with large portions of the broadcast
telecommunications traffic flowing openly through one of the atlantic
ocean region satellites and HF trunk, broadcast, service and amateur
networks. The material on sector V. is released to be reused by anyone
abiding to general GPL rules for further work, analysis and reflection.
The work starts with a quote from the text “The radio of the future”
(in german) by the Russian avant-garde poet Velimir Khlebnikov, whose
work is instrumental in understanding the underlying logic and conceptual
background of the Makrolab project but also Projekt Atol in general,
and continues through different sectors which are mainly defined by
rhythmical changes. It could be described as a landscape of signals
and sounds, a time- framing operation and archiving of electromagnetic
and signal moments, which would otherwise be lost in the eternity of
the spectral rules, abiding to somehow very strict laws of physics.
The release was initially produced in the Hoerspiel studios at the HR
headquarters in Frankfurt in August 1997 and broadcast in October 97
over the german radio networks. The work started with Signal Territory
I, continues in many live events of the Wardenclyffe (together with
Raster/Noton) and Signal-Sever! performance series and a further release
Signal Territory: Signal-Sever! is planned to be released in the beginning
of 2003. |
